New York City Art Series: Marcel Dzama

One of my favorite NYC traditions over the last 4 years is to attend the New York City Ballet Art Series. This year I am excited to attend the 2016 Art Series collaboration with  Marcel Dzama.

Dzama will exhibit Art Series’ first ever digital installation this winter on the theater’s Promenade, complete with a chess match dance off and an incognito appearance by Amy Sedaris.

The Art Series installation will be on view at three special New York City Ballet Art Series performances on February 6 Eve, 11, and 19 where all tickets are priced at $30, and each audience member will receive a limited edition commemorative takeaway from the artist.

Pictures will be available on my Facebook from the experience on February 6th!

NYCB Art Series 2015

On the evening of February 27, 2015 I attended the third edition of the New York City Ballet (NYCB) Art Series at David Koch Theatre, which featured an exhibition of 2015 Art Series contemporary artist Dustin Yellin. The night included three wonderfully inspiring and beautiful ballets created in the 21st century: Pictures at an Exhibition‘Rōdē,ō: Four Dance Episodes (New Copland/Peck) and Mercurial Manoevres. At the end of the evening a gift was received (art book) by all audience members created by Yellin.

Artwork filled the Promenade and Lobby areas. In the Promenade Yellin’s Psychogeographies dominated the space. The glass sculptures from the ongoing Psychogeographies series are 3,000 pounds and made from cut up books, magazines, art history books and trash. Unlike other pieces in the series, these bodies are moving.

Audience members engaged and examined Yellin’s art pieces throughout the night. The level of detail and precision to create the 3,000 pound sculptures was evident from first glance at the artwork. As you continued to view the pieces the tiny details popped out at you.

Opening of Gibney Dance Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center

Founded in 1991 as a performing and social action dance company, Gibney Dance made Studio 5-2 at 890 Broadway the Company’s artistic home.

Gibney Dance has and continues to do amazing work within the dance and local community. They provide more space for dance, support for the development of emerging choreographers, opportunity for artist feedback sessions, studio rentals, affordable dance classes and work with domestic violence survivors. Their community action division was founded in 2000 and provides workshops, programs, training and residencies in relation to working with domestic violence survivors. In fact, Gibney Dance was the first program to unite dancers with survivors with domestic violence.

On Thursday October 30th I attended the opening of Gibney Dance’s Lower Manhattan location near City Hall named the “Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center”.  It was such an exciting and inspiring event as I viewed the new facility!

I have been searching for months for any clues as to who the next contemporary artist to collaborate with the New York City Ballet (NYCB) would be, and it is with great excitement last night I saw the announcement for the 2014 NYCB Art Series! This year, the NYCB will collaborate with the French artist known as JR for the second annual art series.

JR will share his Art Series installation during three special performance evenings — January 23, February 7, 13 — when every seat in the house is available for just $29. On these evenings, every audience member will receive a takeaway created specifically for this event.

The tickets to the NYCB Art Series sell out very, very quickly so buy pre-sale as soon as you can for this very special event! From taking part last year I know how special the whole evening is and recommend it to all art patrons and art enthusiasts as well as those who’ve never been to a ballet. It is a fantastic time and loads of fun with the exhibition, ballet, and reception.

ART SERIES Pre-Sale: Thursday, January 2 at noon through Sunday, January 5 at noon. Enter your pre-sale promo code on any of the performance information pages  to unlock seating options for all three Art Series performances. (Find presale code on JR’s website: http://www.jr-art.net/)

Please note that Art Series purchases are limited to 4 tickets per performance. Should you attempt to select more than 4 seats in the seat map, or add more than 4 seats per performance to your cart, you will encounter an error message prohibiting your purchase.

NYCB Art Series commissions contemporary artists to create original works of art inspired by our unique energy, spectacular dancers, and one-of-a-kind repertory of ballets. New York City Ballet has worked with leading and emerging artists throughout the Company’s history — luminaries like Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Julian Schnabel. We are proud to continue this tradition through annual collaborations with some of the most compelling new artists on the scene today.
