Gibney Dance is a groundbreaking organization whose mission is to bring the power of movement and self-expression where it would not otherwise exist. Its vision is to tap into the vast potential of movement, creativity, and performance to effect social change and personal transformation through its interrelated fields of action — Company, Community Action, and Dance Center. Gina Gibney Dance, Inc. (Gibney Dance) was founded in 1991 as performing and community action dance company. Gibney Dance is noted for having developed a sustainable model that involves a year round company of dancers, thriving social action programs and a stable artistic home, Gibney Dance Center at 890 Broadway. Gibney Dance Center is comprised of many different facets, including rental space, dance company, and community action. Community action practice and tools have been focused on using the power of dance and creativity to assist at-risk youth, individuals affected with HIV/AIDS and empower domestic violence survivors. During the month of October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Gibney Dance Center is hosting events centered on increasing awareness and providing information that pertains to domestic violence in the United States and abroad. As noted on their website, October is a time to recommit ourselves to serving the needs of survivors and their families as well as recognize the efforts to reduce domestic violence. Gibney Dance has been working with domestic violence survivors since 2000 and works in partnership with some of the most highly regarded social service organizations to offer free workshops every year.
